Drone Profiling Before Attack
Organized criminal networks now deploy commercial drones to profile target vessels days before a physical attack. They map crew positions, count personnel, identify bridge access points and assess security readiness — all from beyond visual range, with zero risk to the operator. By the time the boat approaches, the attack is already planned.
Explosive Drone & Surface Attacks
The June 2024 sinking of the MV Tutor in the Red Sea marked the first commercial vessel ever destroyed by an unmanned drone boat. Houthi forces have since attacked 178 vessels using coordinated swarms of aerial drones, anti-ship missiles and armed unmanned surface vehicles — a tactic now being adopted by non-state actors globally.
Drone-Guided Attacks at Straits
The Singapore Strait recorded 43 piracy incidents in 2024 alone — with a 93% vessel boarding success rate. In the Strait of Hormuz, Bab-el-Mandeb and Malacca, drones are used to track slow-moving vessels through narrow passages where evasive manoeuvre is impossible and response time for naval assets is measured in hours, not minutes.
Intelligence-Led Hostage Operations
In March 2024, all 23 crew of the MV Abdullah were taken hostage by Somali pirates who released them only after a $5 million ransom. Modern kidnap operations are intelligence-driven: drones identify high-value crew, assess vessel vulnerability and coordinate approach vectors before a single pirate boat leaves shore. Detection must happen at the drone stage.
